Dem chairman replies to his GOP counterpart
Published: July 9, 2010
Former presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson once quipped, "A hypocrite is the
kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and
make a speech for conservation." This quote could not sum up the latest letter to
the editor by Joe Sterns more perfectly.
Although the new chairman of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee, one
would be remiss not to recall the old Joe Sterns. This is the same Joe Sterns who
worked so diligently to defeat both Republican state Rep. Bob Allen and
Republican state Sen. David J. "Chip" Brightbill because of their support for the
infamous, middle-of-the-night pay raise. Yet ironically, here is Sterns expressing
support for Dave Argall, with no mention of how Argall was not only one of the
chief authors of the pay raise, he was the House Majority Whip solely responsible
for ensuring the House had the necessary votes to pass the bill.
Sterns then criticizes Tim Holden for seeking his 10th term in Congress, implying
term limits should be in effect. Yet where was Sterns when Dave Argall was
serving his 26 years in the state Legislature?
Sterns then goes on to blame Neal Goodman and Tim Seip for helping Gov.
Rendell "ring up a projected $2.3 billion deficit this year while raising taxes on job
creators and working Pennsylvanians." Of course, he makes these inaccurate
contentions while this year's budget doesn't raise taxes on either of those
groups. Funny, there is no mention by Sterns that Dave Argall has voted for every
Rendell budget but two. I guess, then, Argall would be responsible for the deficit
and raising taxes.
Committee chairmanship is not an easy job. But, it seems if you can be hypocritical
about everything, it would be a lot easier.
